This mosaic represents the "Kaguya" Terrain Camera (TC) "Ortho" mosaic. Please note this mosaic was created using a different control network from other LMMP products (which are controlled to LOLA) and thus may not always register well to those prodcuts. The mosaic is derived from data acquired by the Terrain Camera (TC) instrument aboard the Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) satellite flown by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The mosaic can be considered a merged best-of version which was produced at 4096 pixels/degree (7.4 meter spatial resolution) and includes images from the low-sun Morning (early or right-to-left low-angle solar illumination) and Evening (late or left-to-right solar illumination) TC mosaics. The “Ortho” version is termed by the Kaguya team as indicating simulated vertical illumination.

- Purpose:
-
Objectives for the TC instrument included production of global, high-resolution, high-contrast mosaicked map-projected tiles of the Moon (Haruyama 2008, Kato 2006). Two Morning and two Evening illumination near-global tile sets were released by the SELENE team; the second set was a spatially redundant but improved version, with increased image coverage and fewer mis-registrations and image offsets. The Morning tile sets cover ~88% of the lunar surface and the Evening sets provide ~89% spatial coverage. In addition, a global orthographic or “Ortho” product is available; the latter has been gap-filled with MI data to achieve ~95% global coverage.

The absolute horizontal accuracy is dependent on the absolute horizontal accuracy of the Kaguya DEM. These mosaics currently do not register to the most recent control network as derived from LOLA (and thus most LMMP products).

The source tiles were downloaded from the online Kaguya archive system (l2db.selene.darts.isas.jaxa.jp). For each near-global product, 3x3-degree mosaicked tiles (7,200 nominal count) are available in map-projected form at a 4096 pixels/degree (~7.4 m/pixel) mapping resolution. The tiles are spatially co-registered to the Kaguya global Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS) along with local compute and storage cluster configurations were used to generate the products
